WEEKEND PREVIEW: Hokies Set to Welcome the Terps

Updated: Oct 22

With Halloween right around the corner, no entity has been more frightening to face than the Virginia Tech Men's Ice Hockey Team. Winners of nine in a row, the Hokies look to continue haunting the competition as they welcome the Maryland Terrapins to the Lancerlot Sports Complex this weekend.

Tech has dominated in the early part of the season. Throughout the first ten games, they are 9-1 with a historic nine-game-winning streak after losing their first game of the season to NC State. In October, the team is 6-0, averaging 6.5 goals per game.

Speaking of history, last Friday's matchup against West Virginia saw three records break. In the third period, captain Gavin Peduzzi collected his 154th point, placing him first all-time in program history in scoring. Head Coach Joey Mullen would follow that up with the Hokies win, securing his 193rd ACCHL coaching win, the most in league history. Finally, Friday night marked the team's eighth consecutive win, the longest streak in program history.

Looking ahead, the Hokies welcome the Maryland Terrapins for two games this weekend. The Terps have been a mixed bag this season with a 4-3-2 record after being swept by ACCHL rival Penn State last weekend. Last season saw the Hokies take a 6-3 win over the Terps at the ACCHL Fall Showcase tournament.

Additionally, points will be at stake Saturday night as Tech looks to go 2-0 in league play. The Hokies previously defeated Rider 5-4 to clinch three points towards the final standings.

Friday's game will be themed "PINK OUT" in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Fans can donate to the cause at the arena or go online and support. The team will also host a Kids Halloween Night full of fun costumes and a contest for a chance to win a free skate card courtesy of the Lancerlot Sports Complex.

On Saturday, Tech will honor former forward Stephen Gerke as he is inducted into the ACCHL Hall of Fame. The ceremony will start after warm-ups and conclude with a ceremonial puck drop by Stephen.

Fans can tune into the game live or on YouTube via the Virginia Tech Hockey Network. The weekend begins Friday with puck drop at 7:30 pm and concludes Saturday at 6:30 pm.
